Re: Too Much $$$$ - musings a week before payday

Even though this is kind of Non Roc, it does apply here in a big way. I
love this list for all the 16v content and since I am a technician at a VW
performance shop, I can sometimes add some information or help for others
with problems with their cars. This said, I own a 77 Rabbit. The car was
given to me when the previous owner put the t-belt on wrong and got
frustrated. Originally it had the 1.6L and a few mods (wheels, tires,
nuespeed t-body, sway bars, bushings, MK1 cluster, MK1 steering wheel, etc.)
which made it pretty fun and quick if you didn't want to go above 90
(original 4spd tranny). Eventually, I came accross someone who swapped a
16v into a rabbit and wanted to sell it. The car wasn't worth much and he
knew it, so I took everything 16v out of the car (motor, trans, axles, lower
control arms, knuckle assys, entire car/engine harness with computers) and
stuck it in my car (took a while). Since the car was free, I do ALL my own
work, I paid $800 for the 16v rabbit parts car, I had a quick little cheap
rabbit. I have done QUITE a few upgrades since which includes a 2.0L block
and rebuilt everything in the motor (PP head, cams, etc.). Outside of my
labor, the new motor cost me around $500 and that includes a complete
overhaul of the block and head and all exterior parts (tune-up/t-belt,
etc.). With the various other parts that I have installed on the car plus
parts that I have to install (16v brakes (everything) euro intake, weber
t-body, euro f.i. and ignition, etc.) I would put my total at right around
$2000. Keep in mind I am a master as swapping parts and I do all of my own
work having access to a total machine shop (Cool ain't it Chris D.!!!)
plus I know where to look for used parts CHEAP!! I am pushing about 180hp
and all I need is a little interior work and a paint job. The car has been
in the fam since it was new also. Even though they don't apply anymore, I
have every receipt on the car even the purchase receipt from the dealer.

You can do it cheaper!!!!!
