Fuel system problems

Ok, I'm finally getting up to write this e-mail. My rocco is acting rather
odd. First off, when I change my air filter or move the airbox, the car wont
start. When I turn the key on I get no noise from EITHER fuel pump. Now when
this happened my mechanic stopped by on his way home for the night, and
banged on the rear fuel pump while I ran the starter - finally started and
no probs. Again I opened the airbox coz a friend wanted to see my K&N - no
start. So I banged on the pump some, no start. Finally I just kept the
starter turning and she finally started. I go driving and intermittently the
whole fuel system would die and it would feel like I slammed on the breaks,
but then it would start working again - as long as I was moving it would
recover. Then finally it just went away and my rocco worked reliably for
weeks. A couple weeks ago after my car had been sitting a while, I went to
start it and it wouldnt start - well I had a friend in the car and I didnt
want to be screwing with my fuel system so I just kept the starter running -
after 35 secs or so she started right up and only choked once about five
mins later while driving...hasn't screwed up since. I did have my mechanic
check out the system before I came to school (about a month ago) and he
couldn't find anything. His thought was a loose electrical hookup or frayed
wire going to the fuel distributor - nope. Does anyone have any thoughts??
If its one of the fuel pumps I cant tell which one because the whole fuel
system is either on or off when it decides to run (or not) - as in when its
not working I get no buzz from anything and when it does work, everything
seems normal. It would seem that because he banged on the rear pump and it
started that it was the rear pump that was the prob - but why would it screw
up when i opened the airbox? My thought it that she just started while he
happened to be banging on it.
