Valve seals would seem a common reason. The oil leaks into the
combustion chamber and 'boins' right up. It is increased under load but
doesn't leak as much at idle.

Think about some lubro moly oil flush to clean out the deposits, this
might help things seal a bit more but there is no putting worn metal
back.

In any case you doing good maintenance might bring about a slight
improvement.
