re: good engine for a mk1

um wow man you guys must get good engines and cheap prices!
there is no way in hell a 2.0L 16v engine can be had and
installed and last a long time for $2,000, are you forgetting
hes going to have to switch to cis-e, and get that engine r/r'd
I mean ok lets say you pick up a 2.0 for 800$, thats about going
rate, then $500 in a total r/r, $200 for a cis-e system, new
exhaus $300, and labor to drop it in and wire it up in a decent
ammount of time, which around me would be like $800.

a JH is a good easy swap than can be done for like $500, but it
would take about 500 in r/r (new performance cam included) then
yer at like 105hp. that's what i would do.

but i suggested he just buy my p/p 1.7l head w/ g-grind. my
little 1.7L is in the 110-115hp range and can woop the shit
out of a 150hp 1.8l 16v off the line, and for the cost of a
new headgasket, stud bolts and the head yer under $500! heh

sure its no powerhaus, but now you can add those 16v sport
seats, upgrade your headlights, add 16v 10.1 rotors up
front and 9.4 discs in the rear, and get a tint job and
still be under 2,000. anything over 120hp is going to cost
you at least 2,000 if not a lot more and a lot of down time.
which I guess if you can afford to have your car sit for weeks while you do
all the work then a stock 1.8l 16v that has been
r/r may just come under budget.

these people that swap in 16v engine for low cost spend a lot, and i mean a
LOT of time doing most all of the work themselves
so don't forget all the costs of needed tools and service.

of course this is all my OPINION, there is always a case where
everything i said can be had for cheaper some way or another if
you sit on your ass long enough waiting for a good deal. :-)

oh duh i almost forgot an Audi 80 2.0L bubble block is a damn
good swap too that wont cost much! dumb me! look into that
route too, but i dont know much about it.

dont forget when you step up in mass power you really should
upgrade brakes, tires, and probably need a new fuel pump, so
make sure you know the REAL cost of upgrading to certain
engine power ranges
