RE: My thoughts on 1.8T motors

Mark,

In the U.S., All of the A3 & A4 VW 8V motors are
1984CC (Code ABA) blocks with crossflow heads and
Motronic. This engine is not available in Europe
	(according to my VAG cd).

I think we have the crossflow engine in a couple of applications ('cos I've
definitely seen one here). Probably new bug and some Golf models.

As for the 1.8T motors, I don't know a thing except
that the "short block" has the same bolt holes as the
good old 1.8 motors from the 80's.

If the US A3s and A4s share the same short engine then you guys are
extremely lucky, and the 20V engine will just be a drop in fit!
The belt covers and such like will need modifying slightly to clear the
engine mount, and you will need to replace the complicated cam belt
auto-tensioning thing with a pulley from a 16V engine. If its from an A3
then you can even use the cable shift box complete with clutch and flywheel.
If you feel the need, a rod-shift box will fit if you use the original
inside-out clutch.

Is your friends Jetta A1 or A2 shape? If its A2, then the Audi A3 (duh -
stupid to change the naming convention) engine will drop straight in without
even changing the mounts! (thats assuming that your A3s are using the old
block).

Cheers! It's nice to be appreciated. (tell that to my other half ;-)
