Engine build changes.....

I would just send this message to those who I intended to read this to
but its just too easy to send it to the list. (So I don't forget anybody
and the rest can laugh at my misfortune.
)
Well, due to the twist of fate, it looks like I will be forced to
rearrange my engine building schedule. Heres why----

Saturday was an autox at the stadium. I had Todd Cameron (a former list
member and current DSP Scirocco builder) co-drive my roc to help me dial
in my new tire wheel combo. (Tire pressures.)

On his second run, he heard a knocking and quickly shut it down and
coasted back to the pits. (Great job Todd, I appreciate your quick
thinking!)

As light as it was it sounded like the #1 rod bearing might have hammered
the top bearing half. Being that the vast majority of my tools are at my
work, I lacked the important 1/4" drive socket, extension and the adapter
to use them on my impact wrench. (Makes removing the oil pan a 3 minute
job.)

So, today after work, I drop the pan and start grabbing rods and sure
enough, the #1 is loose. Nuts are tight but there's alot of play in the
rod end. I removed the cap and the bearing was for the most part, welded
to the other shell half. It had spun in the connecting rod and the
crankshaft. It left alot of deposits on the crank which can be machined
out (at a later date.)

The bottom line is that the engine will need to be pulled and if im going
to do that, im not putting the JH back in only to remove it and install
it in project DSP in the winter. So im going to hold off on the 2.0L
Motronic swap into the GLi til later. Looks like I will be building my
2.0L 8V right now. my original plan of 165hp to the crank is gonna have
to wait for later. For now I will just build the bottom end, get a hyd
head for it and swap in the knock sensor so I can get it back on the
road. Looks like it will be 2 weeks til I get it running again. So in the
meanwhile I wont be running at buttonwillow this next weekend. (Toesha,
we need to chat on what were gonna do about transportation of "Project
DSP" to so-cal.)
Nor will I be going to the Dec 4th road racing event in holtville. All
this is to save the funds that I will need to complete this rushed engine
project.

So, that's where everything stands for now.
