Mystery Rattle

Here's one for the FAQ --

Today I dropped the amp and subs from my old car in for a test before the
final install and everything went great, except for an annoying rattle
that I got at certain frequencies. On one CD, one of the songs I played
hit the frequency about twice a second... talk about annoying! I popped
the hatch to try and find the source but looked for a while to no avail.

Finally, I looked around one last time before giving up and saw the 3rd
brake light (or, in vwspeak, the "center stop light"). Bingo! As soon as I
put my hand on it the rattle stopped. So, if you're having a problem with
rattles, check your 3rd brake light.

One other place that was giving me trouble was the plastic face that the
license plate is mounted on. I tapped the sides of it with my fingers and
it would rattle loudly. I took off the 4 screws that held the license
plate on, removed the plate and carefully eased the plastic piece
behind it out, then I put on some small strips of adhesive foam padding
used for insulating pipes. It worked great, but the stratigic placing of
the squares of foam is an art. Half a millimeter made the difference for
me in one spot.

Just thought I'd share this info with you guys,

-Toby
