16V Frustration



<x-charset iso-8859-1>I am up against a bunch of little sniggling things with my rocco that alone
would be no big deal, but that together are starting to get overwhelming and
getting me to thinking about a new project car...

1. Oil pressure, or none of it rather. I have just put a new (OEM, German)
pump on, less than 1k miles ago, when I rebuilt the motor. I put a pressure
gauge on the car and it is marginal. I bumped the oil to 20W50 in hopes of
forcing the pressure up, still trips the light/buzzer sporadically. On a
16V, the Intermediate shaft doesn't need timed, correct? I'm grasping
here...

2. Stumble off-idle, especially bad when cold. New O2 sensor, cold start
sensor/valve. Makes my wife nervous entering traffic, don't blame her.
Should I consider advancing the distributor in exchange for losing some
top-end? Euro intake cam? TT fuel enrichener module? Timing currently is
dead-on spec, as is fuel.

3. I have a set of Autotech sway bars, big and juicy. The rear bar attaches
through the lower shock bolts rather than clipping onto the trailing arm as
the stocker. Or is supposed to. It was shipped with the bolts turned inward
to avoid damage (I guess) My attempts to turn the bolts to face back out
have resulted in starting to bend/shear the bolts. Any tips from someone
whose used this style bar before? BTW, without the rear mounted, the front
bar redefines understeer. I thought my Alfa was bad...

4. Intermittently, the car smokes heavily. It hasn't used any oil or water,
both are free of the other, and the smoke doesn't smell characteristically
of either. Makes the car look like crap, does little to reassure SO that I
gave her a reliable car. I did dump a pint of Techron into the gas tank, is
this what is causing this? OTW what might it be? Car has new rings, fresh
valve seats/guides/seals, new head gasket, and good compression (haven't
checked leakdown).

5. Replaced exhaust hangars, replacement OEM stainless exhaust. Exhaust
resonates really badly, can't seem to adjust it out through the hangars, nor
see/feel where it is in contact to cause the buzzing. Common location for
tight clearances? Flaw of stock exhaust?

6. I have "Avus" GTI wheels under the car, on 195/60/14s, one size over
stock. Stock springs, Boge TurboGas struts. When I turn the steering wheel,
something rubs under the car, but visual inspection doesn't show the tire up
against anything. Anyone else had clearance problems on 195/60's?

7. Every time I prop the front of the car up on jackstands and then let it
back down, the steering wheel is off-center, 50-50 the alignment is out
(toed-out). Happened on my A1 GTI also. Bad steering rack bushings? Bad
design?
