new xferpump installed - question - how to reduce fuel pressurebacklog in system?

<x-flowed>
per the subject-

i finally spent an additional $16 for a damn filter/strainer for $84 xfer
pump - the math comes to $100!! wtf?

anyway, as i was taking apart the fuel hoses off the top of the assembly
(under the back seat) a huge amount ~ 0.75 liters of backlogged gas shot
out (i redirected it into a water bottle). this was too much for comfort.
the last time i did this maybe half a cup or so came out under pressure
(but the car was sitting around a day without driving, the outside temp was
cold, and there was little gas in the tank) - still, today i had only 1/4
tank of gas, mild temps, and had been driving around to get the new part 15
minutes before working on it.

so the question is - is there any way to reduce the fuel pressure backlog
_before_ taking the hoses off the assembly?

the only way i can think of is to crack open the assembly a bit to release
tank pressure or i guess i could have gone over to the refill cap and
opened it up. duh. anything else?

thanks
dave
