Doing the bulk of my modifications while in college, I found some good
ways to reliabley get a pretty good bang for the buck.  And kudos for
wanting to make the car run first!  After all, a hot car does no good if
all it does is sit around in need of repairs.

One thing you may want to think about for suspension work is the front
stressbars. A1 chassis VW's are notorious flexi-flyers.  This is mainly
due to the poor reinforcing around the A arm mounts to the frame.  I
started out with the Neuspeed upper and lower stressbars and they made a
large difference by themselves.  (I have since switched to Autotech's
subframe.  I haven't done any trackwork since the swap, so I really don't
know how much of a difference there it.  It feels better, though.)  Even
the best suspension is worthless if the frame can't keep it all on the
ground.
