Changing the fuel filter is a good idea anyways.

My 84 8v passed 250K last year, and I have been storing it for the winter
for the past 3 years.

Last year, I changed the fuel filter, the distributor, the ignition
cables, the spark plugs, all of which were so old I can't remember when
exactly I last changed them. I also took it to a VW specialist around
the corner, and he tuned it up. That seemed to give a lot more pick-up to
the engine.

I am getting 450 to 500 kms per tank, but this being an early 84,
I only have a 40 liter tank.

Anyways, hope you get the problem resolved. Good luck!
