Shift Rod alignment

Ok, it's my fault...

My question is - the shift rod that goes from the
bottom of the shifter to all the linkage components.
There is the l-shape piece near the engine, and the
housing that the boot goes on under the shifter. Are
both those ends straight, or are they off-set? I
pulled the rod apart this weekend, and marked how ti
was aligned before I took it apart, but when I took it
apart my markings got obscured by lots of fun oil &
grease (where IS it all coming from??).

Anyways, I put it all back together so both sides are
paralell, but when I put the new shift assembly back
inside the car it looks like it might need to go
straight up & down on the far end (by the tranny) and
maybe at a 12-15deg angle to connect to the shifter...

How is it supposed to be set up? It'll really piss me
off if I can't get my car into gear after coating
myself with black crap 2 weekends in a row.... :)

Also, how hard is it to align the shift linkage? Can I
do it by feel or will I need the little alignment
tool?

Thanks as always....
