Brainstorm off the top of my head seems to think they would be for a
minimal amount of air to enter in the event of blockage. Might perform a
bit of 'swirling' of the incoming air as well. In your application I'd
recommend not blocking them completely but put a flap on the inside to
allow for incoming air if the motor pulls it in and for blockage when
the pressure is greater in the box vs atmospheric.
