Inlet manifold problem/question

This is to anyone who has experience with the type of manifold on the
early audi 2.0L engines, i.e. with injector seats in the manifold and
not in the head.
I have an audi 80 2.0 engine ('92 UK)with this type of head. There is a
channel which links all the injector seats with a hose connector at the
TB end of the manifold. On my engine it is covered with a plug. The
plastic injector seats have holes which appear to allow air flow down
between the seat and the injector, via this common channel. Just the
other day I saw another audi 80 engine with the same common channel, but
in this case there is a hose which plugs in to the bottom of the rubber
joint (can't remember what it's called) just before the TB, i.e. it
bypasses the TB.

Does anyone know what this is supposed to do? I though I saw something
about cooling the injectors but I'm not sure. There is no Haynes manual
for that series of Audi so I'm stuck for information about the engine.
I do have a problem with slight pinking if I've been stuck in a traffic
queue for a long time, which always goes once I get going again. I
don't know if maybe this has something to do with that.
I'd appreciate any help on this.

TIA
