This shouldn't be too tough if the fuel injection and ignition systems are
in good working order.
first of all, you should clean out the airbox and everything past that
(t-body, intake manifold..) with carb cleaner to clean up the oil. That
makes your car run really dirty. Just spray a shitload in there and then
start the car. The oil gets in there from the Positive Crankcase
ventilation hooked up to your airbox from the valve cover. Very, VERy
common, especially if you turn high RPM ever. Sounds like the oil got into
your idle Stabilizer Valve and gunked it up too for a bad idle. Take it out
and clean it thoroughly w/ carb cleaner. Then before any emmisions test, I
clean and regap spark plugs (maybe replace them) and check the cap and
rotor. Another important step for me is to have the fuel injection 'power
cleaned'. The VW shop near me hooks up a pressurized can of cleaner to the
fuel injection and runs it throught the system and injectors. I usually
notice a nice power increase. Im sure its from a better injector spray
pattern, the fuel is more even and better atomized. It costs like $50
bucks, and I do it every 2 years. GL! This should work, it helped me--my
rocco would've passed the stringent CA emissions with NO cat! but they
check for that stuff, so i put it back on and passed with around 20 HC and
.01% CO and 6 NOx at 25 mph.
