That production number was reset at the end of each model year.
If you tot-up the figures in the fiche VIN/chassis datasheets and
extrapolate a sensible amount for the final month of each year ( the figure
listed is rounded-up ) you get the following estimate:
826,000 total production, of which 306,000 were MKIIs

The end of your serial # is the production #. Mine is 23,976 DOM 4/87.
