Re: Easy mods for MkII 8v?

What year we talking about? Chances are that you have the worst exhaust
manifold that VW ever put on an A1 chassis car. If you've got the four into
one manifold with the round output to the downpipe then you have to get rid
of it. Give it the big heave ho and replace it with a four into two piece
from an early Scirocco. Then bolt on a nice Techtonics downpipe and you're
in business. I've got one for sale, btw...

The next thing you do is replace the cam with something a little bit hotter.
If you've got a solid lifter head and about a hundred bucks, then get
yourself a g-cam. (i.e. euro factory GTI cam). But, if you've got only a
coupleof dollars floating around, the tip is to install a cam from a puny
1.6 or 1.5 liter motor. Believe it or not, these are hotter then the 1.8l
cams. If you've got a hydraulic head ('85 and up) then you'll have to ask
someone else for their recommendations.

So, now you've got a very noticeable increase in power. After this point,
the power increases become more subtle. The last quasi bolt on that I'd do
is the big Audi 5000 (or Golf) throttle body. This will bolt right up to the
stock manifold. However, you've got to bore the plenum out a bit (and weld
it to add more material) to make it match up properly.

After all this is done, you'll probably have about +15hp or so. -time and
money spent wisely, indeed!

P.S. Aren't you the guy who wants to build the rally car? What's the scoop
on that?
