Re: SCIROCCO SURVEY for everyone

>When did you first know you had to have a Scirocco for yourself?

Spring, 1975 when the first models arrived in California.

I was a VW fan from the day I picked up my 71 super beetle in Germany.
Through the early 70's, some friends and I were into hotrodding air
cooled cars, and I learned to appreciate the German approach to
construction (easy to maintain, a 13mm and a 17mm wrench would take
care of 95% of the fasteners on the car, and parts were always
available). The bug body was just lacking in "coolness" however. I
was considering buying a Karmann Ghia when the Scirocco was
introduced. I was looking for a car to keep and certainly hotrod as
soon as the warranty expired. The Scirocco was the perfect platform,
and in April of 1975 I took the plunge. They were somewhat hard to
find, and dealers kept trying to sell me Rabbits and (yuk!) Dashers as
an alternative, but after a couple of weeks I made a deal for my car.
I wanted a silver one, but settled for lagunenblau. No regrets.
