Tell your wife that you are not insane.  I can think of a few
other money soaked hobbies that husbands may take part in that
make for a very unhappy homelife.  Personally, I have been lucky
that my car hasn't been expensive, yet.  But I haven't gotten into
too many mods, cosmetics, yet either.  And when I do, it'll be a
torment, because I have another car (non-scirocco) which I am
eager to finish restoring, too.  For me it's easier to treat my
car fixin' money separate, kinda like mad money.  I keep an
envelope in the freezer (I know, this sounds insane) that is
marked, "Christine", (the other car's name--I didn't name it, my
college buddies did) and whenever a paycheck, or birthday money,
etc. comes in, I tuck away a portion of it in the freezer.  My
cold, hard, cash is somehow harder to spend if it's not in the
checking account!  I don't make a lot, either (retail management
for a while, clerical work, now) but it's a matter of priority:  I
like to travel and fix up my car, so fun money just goes there!
