Professional paint jobs _do_ cost a few thousand dollars. A good friend
of mine,
who is really into restoring old muscle cars, told me its not uncommon
to see
$3000 price tags on repainting show cars. And that is: nearly taking
everything
apart {ideally, you do down to the body}, pulling any dents, reworking
panels,
many primer coats, many paint coats, several finish coats, etc. 
I know what kind of scheme Id love to see my 16v in, but Im afraid it'll
hafta
wait..$$$
