	I had something of that nature, But a bit diffrent. Started when someone cut
me off and I had to brake hard and downshift into second really, really,
really, really, fast.
Well after a few seconds of slowing down in second it just poped out. No noise
nothing just popped out. I though nothing off it and started going first,
secong, third, er . . .  wait second didn't go in so I skipped over it and
kept going. Still no noise so I figured it was nothing. Well after a few miles
of traffic I got worried when It didn't go into second. So the next day I was
going to school and my tranny started to make noise and slowly and surly fail
after about 100 mile day. 

	I limped to the clsest performance shop that would be able to do a quick tear
down of my tranny. Thats when I found out second gear was mangled and so
messed up that I couldn't force into the gear with a 16lbs hammer to the
shifter. I didn't have time to replace gear, so I bought a used tranny.

	Can't say this is your case but if you did just kill that gear and have the
time rebuild it to suit your porpose if you haven't already made that gear box
an autocross box.

	Wish I could help more but hey I haven't had the time to do a total rebuild
and study of vw trannies, But I will soon.
