stick shift woes

On saturday, on my way to work, something bad happened with my stick shift.
Hopefully someone may be able to lead me in the right direction:

everything was cool as I pulled into a gas station to fill up. turned car
off. everything seems as usual. got back in car, turned car on (still in
neutral).. everything cool.. then I reached for stick shift.. everything
changed.

I noticed the stick shift was about 2" shorter and I couldnt get into 1st.
I had to pull the stick shift up and wiggle it a bit, and then it popped
back up to it's normal height, as if it 'found' an opening and came up
through that opening. Without me pulling up on the stick shift, it falls
back down into this 'hole' where it's VERY difficult to change gears. In
addition.. there is no longer any spring-like guidance when moving from one
gear to another.

So in order for me to change gears at all, I have to pull up on the stick
shift and 'guess' at the right position to get into the right gear. I have
to start out on 2nd gear when I'm at a stop at a light because I never know
when I'm in 1st or reverse (i actually made that mistake once.. the guy
behind me must have $hit his pants)

Lemme know if anyone has has this problem before and what to do to fix it..
or should I take it to a professional mechanic. I'm HOPING it's just some
kind of suspension spring that snapped.... I guess I wont be replacing my
motor mounts as soon as I thought.... although I never did like all the
'play' I have in my transmission (at least an inch no matter what gear i'm in)

thanks for reading.. and thanks for any info.
