It would be a shame to replace it when it works fine. Like I said, it
should cost much less than to replacing it. A decent alternator repair
shop should be able to help you. (I hope you have one available to you. I
have a few near me.) 
Also, I meant to say that you can take the belt off of the alternator and
turn it by hand. Put some downward pressure on the pulley and turn it. It
should feel very smooth less the drag from the brushes. (If you can feel
them at all.) There shouldnt be any hesitstion as it turns.
