>From watching my GTI's steering rack being pulled and an a foiled
attempt to remove the tie rods from the wheel assembly, I'd recommend
replacing them from the rack end.

I have a split boot myself but haven't read up on it yet. Not sure about
recalibrating after reattachment of the rod to the rack.
