schrick 268's = torqueless wonder?

this weekend i installed a set of schrick 268's and an adjustable cam
sprocket on an otherwise stock 1.8 16V (except for a catback system).
now i have less torque to 4K (sorta expected that), but the power never
kicks in at all. i think i felt something at 6K, but not much more than
stock. the problem i have is the adj cam sprocket i put on has a bent
key. i talked to someone at TT and he said it's no big deal because
it's the bolt that takes to torque, not the key. however, i think the
timing may be way off? at 0 deg. on the sprocket, it barely started, on
two cylinders. i floored it and it took about 3 seconds to rev over 3K,
then it revved up fine, but it would not run under 2K. i figured the
bent key has retarded the cam, so i put 4 deg. advance. it started
better, still no torque. so i went 8 deg. advance. (i re-adjusted the
distributor, yes i know about that....). now it'll idle around 1300 no
problem. i have a reasonable amount of torque, but no push until 6K.
is it still too advanced? i expected a little less torque, but i also
expected a payback at around 4K or so. i got nothing. nothing except a
lopy idle. so here's my question(s):

do hot cams NEED a P&P job, headers, no cat to work?
did anyone out there go through get the same results i did?
i expect at LEAST the same performance, not worse....

on another note, does anyone know how i can tell if i have a euro intake
cam? my car was damn fast for stock, maybe i had a euro in there when i
got it and never knew about it?

please help, i am very disappointed. i've heard a lot about these cams
and i want these to work.
