Drew..........I have an 84 (mid 84 I believe) and it has the transfer pump.
I believe the clincher....look at the spare..if it's a full size, no
transfer pump..space saver....transfer pump. As far as the transfer pump
mounting, I'd assume the 16v mounts the same as my 8v...it has the, as you
put it, 1/3 turn lock ring to hold it tight. As far as the swap to A2
style...........I can't help there. Hope my blurb here helps you out.

p.s. I think 84 and later all had the transfer pump........but am not 100%
sure. And all cars with the transfer pump, still have a fuel pump in the
same spot as the non-transfer pump cars.
