As far as the lowly 944 is concerned, when it was compared to the 16v 
Scirocco when it came out (1986) to the 944, they were referring to the 
previous year's (1985) 944 which was outperformed by the 16v.  In late 1988 
though, Porsche introduced the 944S2 which is a car untouched 
perfomance-wise, by a 16v Scirocco.  Of course, an even more not-so-lowly 944 
is the Turbo which, when introduced, recieved so much acclaim for 
outaccelerating the Corvette. 
    
I have a 16v Scirocco that I love and adore.  And it definetely is the 
best-balls-to-the wall bang-for-the-buck car there is... hands down.
