<x-charset iso-8859-1>Sometimes the latch will be in the "closed" position and, of course, you
can't close it if the latch is closed!  I don't know if you have tried this
already, but try unlatching it, push the button, then close it.  I have had
this happen on car doors and on hatch latches.  Makes you feel stupid, but
it could be the problem!
