gauge problems

Hi,

I may have mentioned this before, but my tach/temp/fuel gauge has been
intermittent recently (on an 82).  I just spoke to a mechanic (VW
specialist), and he told me that there is a circuit board on the back of
this cluster that will cause such a problem.  Does anyone know anything
about this?  Have you had this problem?  How much do these things cost? 
Are they available new?
