well, sorta. Your method is fine for a cam meant for solid liftered 
heads, but not for hydraulic lifters. The reason is that hydro lifters 
are sorta "squishy" so they need a little pre-load before the main part 
of the cam lobe gets to the lifter. This pre-load section of the cam 
covers the "smaller part of the lobe." This will throw off your 
measurement. What you need is a way to measure the distance from the cam 
axis. You measure the tip of the lobe and then the opposite end and 
subtract. Tuners use an old head with a dial gauge put up to one of the 
valves. then the cam is turned and the measurements are taken. 

16v Roc's have hydraulic lifters, right?

PS: From what you've said, I think it is very possible that your old cam 
was indeed a euro cam, but you should find out for sure. Maybe you can 
take out your new cam and compare.
