I was going to buy a less expensive one also, but I'm all about
light rotating weight. :) (just ask Mike P.)  The reason you didn't
have to add any retaining key is because the gear you got is
built from a stock gear, which obviously works quite well. :)  The
Kent gear is a new gear, and is supposed to be significantly lighter
then other adjustable cam gears, in fact, it may weigh the same or
less then the stock gear (based on rough hand-2-hand weight at this
moment).

My car should be running by late this week, Wednesday or Thursday. I'm
actually taking time off work to get it done so I can have a short
'shake-down' week before I haul ass in the car 600+ miles (one-way) to
Cincy. :)
