thermostat--where?

I'm at work and away from my repair manual--where is the coolant
thermostat on an S1?  The car is running very hot.  I changed the fan
switch the other day, but that wasn't the problem.  Now I think I need to
pick up a thermostat and replace that before the slow, hot drive home.
The only hose fitting that seems large enough to be hiding the termostat
is the one attached to the water pump--what a messy location.
