hmmm . . . that's an interesting concept.

You mean that VW put two different kinds of speedos in each year's
production after 1982?

You see, every year beginning with 1983 VW sold 8V Sciroccos with either
close ratio or wide ratio trannies.

I would have thought that the gearing to the cable (on the tranny
housing) would have to be the same output at any given speed on each
tranny - resulting in identical speedo readings - but . . . of course
that makes too much sense.

Potterman? Do you know the ultimate answer to this?

It's gotta be for the same final drive as the final drive that you have
in your
car. An '86 is probably designed for whatever the 9A final drive was.
Check it
out, see if the tranny in your car has the same final drive. If not,
that's
why. Do you have the FN tranny? Or maybe the FF? I think they have a
different
final drive, not sure...
