Re: tranny manipulation

I will quote Potterman:

"I have had taller 5th's in most of my cars & it is a give & take
change. If you go for something really tall then you car will be
gutlees in 5th below 3500 or so ( unless you have a 2.2 16v Turbo :-)
Some people like this (shawn ? ) I personally don't. There are many
different ratio's out there from .71 - .75 -.76 -.80 - .85(euro/mex).
The close ratio's boxes had .89's or .91's. I had a .76 in my rocco
for a while & it was nice for crusing but gutless below 3500-4000. I
changed it to a .80 & love it. I'm not sure what you have for a
motor or tranny but it depens on HP & final drive ratio for which 5th
would be good for you. If your doing 4k-4.5k @80-80 sounds like you
have a 9A trans wth a 3.67 final & a .89 5th. A .75 would drop it
around 500 (maybe a little more) & a .80 would be 300-400 but would
give you a little more kick in 5th still. The kits run in the $200
range new but you can search junkyards for tranny's. The mid 80's
base A2's had the .75's in them. The .80's are exclusive to the 4cly
A3 cars so that may be a little harder to find. The early A1's had
the .71's & the .76's which are pretty plentyful in the junkyard's.
It can be done with the trans in the car with the correct tools but
it is eaiser with the trans out IMHO.
