Importance of OXS sensor

'Lo all,

Well, the little OXS light decided to come on this morning, and I was
wondering how important the sensor was.  I didn't notice any real
difference in the vehicle when it went out (aside from my own paranoia).

i.e. - what ill effects will happen if I don't get the sensor replaced
right away?
