Cheers for all the help chaps.

It turned out to be the dimmer thingie. Nice and easy to replace.
I went to the lacal VAG specialist and picked one up for five pounds
(US$7.5)
What a bargain.

While I was there I noticed a bright red Rocco lurking behind a vast array
of Golfs and Polos.
Went and had a closer look, and it turned out to be a mint condition '92
GT2.
Nice Car.
It was for sale for 2600 pounds ($3900 approx).
They said they'd give me 1500 pounds for my car in part exchange. It's so
tempting. There aren't many '92 Roccos about. Didn't have electric windows,
central locking etc. but neither does mine.
Is it worth buying?
It is only 1100 pounds ($1650) after all.
Although I've only had mine for 2 months.
