Jumping Speedo/Cable ends

Are the tranny ends/gears of the speedo cable any different for an 86GTI 
than for the 79 Rocco?

I have replaced my "speedo end" cable and it still jumps.  I am using the 
86 cable because it came already in the tranny and I want to change it to 
try to stop the bouncing but I don't need the headache if it won't work 
right

can I change the gears????
