shifter

I was wondering if a shifter can be made to feel "tighter"? My new '85's
shifter feels really loose (only the handle, not the whole trans). When
it's in gear I can easily move the handle around about an inch side to
side, and two inches forward and back. How is this taken care of? And, how
much would it cost to have it fixed by a mechanic?     -Rob
