Alternator light and a Tach problem

My 85 scirocco has developed 2 problems over the last week.  The first one
is the factory tach has gone haywire.  When the car fires up the tach goes
all the way around to the fuel gauge area.  I checked to see if a wire was
loose but I didn't see one.  Could it be a fuse?

The other problem that has just developed is the alternator light is coming
on during moderate acceleration.  I'm going to check the belt to see if
it's going bad tonight.  It's not making any sounds that I would normally
associate with a loose belt.  Is there anything else besides the belt and
the alternator I should look at?
