"I wouldnt" is my first thought. First, the motor is older than the car. 
Even if it was rebuilt or simply gone thru, its probably got enough heat
cycles on the seals that synthetic will cause something of a leak.
But, there is that chance that everything is really freash in the car. if
this is the case, and you have ZERO oil leaks/seeps/drips/spots and the
like, you could try the swap to synthetic and keep a close eye on it for
20-30 days after the oil change. To me, it would have to be really clean
to consider the swap over to synthetic. 

So, how does it look?
