Actually, your difficulty with engaging first gear could be a matter of
adjustment.  My wife's Golf, and a Jetta I drove recently both suffered from
this...can be as easy to fix as loosening the two bolts that hold the shift
plate (the assembly atop the tranny hump in the car), and moving it minutely
to one side, then re-tightening it.
Won't cure a crispy third-gear synchro, though!
