So I have finally decided to ground my engine better, i've been fairly lazy up
to the past couple weeks with the car, where can I bolt all
these grounds to the block. I just quickly looked, and couldn't think of
anywhere really. I got one from the negative(batt.) to the top of
the coil. Do I want one from the negative(batt.) to body? Also where can I
put the ground on the alternator?? TIA

OK- One of my favorite Newsgroup topics!

Alt Case to Engine Block: Use one of the bolts on the back of the Alt.,
the nut unscrews fairly easy. These are the long bolts that hold the Alt cas
toghether. Other end goes to one of the Valve Cover nuts.

Engine Block to Chassis: I found it easy to go with one one of the Valve
Cover studs to the bolt holding the Upper Tie Bar in place on top of the Pass.
side Shock Tower. Another Idea is to run from the Valve Cover stud to the bolt
holding the Coil braket in place.

Chassis to Neg. Post: This becomes somewhat a question of how long a haevy
guage lead do you have to work with. Some folks run it right down to the bolt
holding the battery in place. The stock location runs up under the battery
tray, I think I ran mine to the driver's side Shock Tower.

Now that we are well grounded,

Pos. Post to Starter: This is the 'no-brainer' part, there are readilly
available replacments already assembled, finding the right length is key. When
measuring, don't forget the engine rocks around a bit so add an extra inch or
two.

Pos. Post to Alt: Hmmm, here, and Hot side to Fuse Box, is were it's
almost better to buy a prefab set like you can find on New Dimension's web
site.

Some folks rip out all the old wires, some just suppliment the existing stuff.
In any case remeber to recondition the existing electrical contacts, there is
the electric lube stuff in a spray can, but just cleaning and reattaching will
help.

Funny side note, I pulled the perfectly good battery out of the GTI last night
to swap it with the '78's battery which had come to me depleated from cranking
and cranking. Anyway I have had problems w/ the GTI's tach only working when
the outside temp was cold. Sitting in the sun or just driving in warm weather
would knock it out. Plus, sometimes the dash lights would be real faint, all
this despite the Volt meter showing 13-14 Volts. Well, last night I slapped
the funky one in, jumped it off the reg. battery and ran the movies back to
b.bluster- Well, things couldn't have been brighter! The dash looks positively
glowing ( must be pregnant ), and the tach works like a champ, hot or cold.

Damn I'm good.
Comforting to be in such great company,
TBerk
