It is the Field Coil Exciter Wire. It is nessesary for the Alt to start and
maintain generating electricity. If it falls off during driving you will begin
to run off the battery until _it_ is drained.

Replacing said wiret may not be nessary, perhaps just reconditioning the end
of the wire with a new connector. Certainly it is not carrying as much wattage
as the primary lead ( big fat wire ) so it's gauge need not be so large. As to
where it goes,
