Sal:
Dont sweat the intermediate shaft gears position. Ignor it and only pay
attention to the cam gear (dot level with the top of the valve cover
mating surface) , and the position of the flywheel mark. (Set to 0* on
the timming marks.)

Then, you can take the cap off the distributor and either position it to
point directly at the #1 cylinder wire, or rotate the wires around the
cap. (either way.)

Have the rotor point at the #1 plug wire and install the cap. This will
get the motor running for you good enough to put a timming light on it
and set properly.
