Re: [Solo II]updating/backdating 16V engine

DM. Can't call it CSP because the 16v never came in the S1 body. You
might be able to squeak through in EP, not legal by any stretch, but you're
not going to be beating any real EP cars anyhow. I would'nt recommend it,
but you could just say the car is CSP - unless the registrar is a VW guy,
you'd not have an issue(until your competitors figure it out. Our CSP
would figure it out fairly quickly. Actually, DSP would point it out to
CSP;).

 complete with stock CIS-E

Up to you - I'd just run Mod and try to go as fast as I could. Well, if it
is a VW show, you might be able to get the CSP people to let it slide -
your tires and suspension are a limiting factor. Problem is, if you beat
someone with similar suspension but a stock head, they have a legitimate
gripe. The lightened flywheel is OK in CSP, the head is not. Beyond the
head, the car is pseudo-legal for CSP - beyond the fact that it is in the
wrong body;). In reality, the body issue is irrelavant at this point of
preparation, a normal 16v with coilovers/camber plates/etc is going to be
faster. Feel it out - you might be able to get competitors to let CSP
slide if it is a VW show. If you came to a Colorado event, I'd put you in
Street Mod - only rules are that the car has to be basically street legal,
DOT tires, glass windshield, wipers, headlights. Your car fits there. If
it were me, I'd run DM & go as fast as I knew how.

Put the wider wheels on the front! That'll probably help a bit.

He was right. The 16v came in the second bodystyle, and the SCCA has split
8v and 16v for SP, so he was actually correct - this kind of motorswap
sorta screws people like you, but with 50-odd classes, the SCCA can't
really make more classes to accomodate people with cars like yours.

Right! The gas pedal is not a switch - think of having an egg between your
foot and pedal - apply gas smoothly and slowly(as slow as you need to).
Feed throttle in as you can - you want the front wheels to accelerate the
car as much as it can in a given situation without spinning, generally
speaking. Treat the brake basically the same way - don't stomp on the
brake, apply it smoothly but quickly. There is a subtle difference. If
the car is loaded enough that it can't take any more gas, wait until it can
before giving it more. Can be frustrating, but you basically have to do it
- - if the front is loaded, and you floor it, spinning both front wheels, the
car will push wide/off line, forcing you to drive a longer line to the same
place. Good luck, hope this lends some insight!
