Well, about the cooling system... unconventional? yes  ... stupid? no.  It
should be a tribute to VW engineers because it actually works rather well.
Cools better than my Scirocco.  

Expensive to fix if you go to the dealer, but then what part/service/brand
isn't expensive at the dealer?  Plenty of aftermarket vendors/manufacturers
have sprung up to supply the Vanagon drivers' population with what they
need.  

Hard to fix?  Huh?  Don't forget that the Vanagon's heyday was in the early
80's with the last ones sold in 91, so the average age is up there.  The
only real problem with the Vanagon is that quite a few have experienced
premature head gasket failure, but I'll take that over some of the other
problems my friends have had with their Chevychryslerford stuff.  But hey,
that's only my opinion.
