Exhaust Leak

Hello all, I am new to this email and was wondering if anyone out there could
give me some advise bout my 86 16v.  I have an exhaust leak in the spring
flange thing on the top of the downpipe that connects to the manifold.  Am I
loosing any performance from not fixing the leak, or would it be better just
to leave it alone?  Am I causing any harm to the engine by not getting it
fixed?  The engine seems to be running very smooth except for a slight miss
while ideling which I attribute to the leak.  I am a student (Broke) and would
rather just leave it like it is because the downpipe is just way too
expensive. Thanks for your help.
