I need some help here folks

I have my CV joints repacked and all the new pretty boots on there, and 
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to install the inner CV joint C-
clips on the axle without destroying them- I have killed four so far. I have
some on there now but I am not confident that I have them seated- is there a
trick to this or am I just being dense?? or do I need to even worry about it?
seems to be plenty of spline on there....

I have my project done except for this, so any help is greatly appreciated....
