Re: 1.8l 8v turbocharging

Well as far as a home brew kit I would say my friend would get the award for
this one....he has a dodge turbo (yes the junkies ones from a datona...cheap
though) in and he did all the pipes for it custom made....even made his own
waste gate. Without beefing up the gaskets in the stock motor they say you
can safely add 6-10 LBS. of boast constantly. This will give you (depending
on your engine) about 40-65 HP at higher RPMs. Now if you want to spend the
money you can do what I am doing right now. I just got a 2.0 8v that I am
lowering the compression on. I am also getting special gaskets that are made
just for the turbo for both the bottom end and the head of the motor. The
gasket is made with special O ring seals around each joint that is about
double the high of the original but still compresses down to what the normal
gasket does. So you get allot of gasket right at the places needed. I have
also heard of this being done by just adding a double gasket...never done it
myself but I am sure it would work if you have the head work done for the
room. Add on turbos suck if you ask me...they have very bad lag because you
never change the Cam to match you torque output and also you can not get
much boost out of the turbo you put onto your car. Make sure that any turbo
you put on your car has a waste gate with it. I have seen allot of supposed
bolt on kits that say they do not need waste gates...I do not think this is
very healthy on your engine. if you are going to be getting just a strap on
stock turbo I would not be changing your plate to anything more than 16VRUNR
but if you want to spend the extra time and money you will have something
that will keep right up with a porche or turbo RX7 no problem...

Ps VR6 conversions are for drag only (highly opinionated)
