I am envious if you can get nitrous free. The price here in the San Francisco
Bay Area is about $4.00/lbs.

I have done this to my '78 with an 1.8L '84 GTI motor. It is fantastic! The
system is a "stock" system from Nitrous Oxide Systems. It is jetted for 50HP.
The kit cost about $540. I installed it myself. So far I have had no
problems with it, except for keeping the wheels from spinning all the way to
redline in 1st gear. I don't get any pinging or knocking. I've had the
system for over a year and have gone through 4 bottles(~40 lbs.) of nitrous.
If done right, I think it is a fun investment. Driving is believing.
